The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMW) of California revoked the registrations of the Uber, effectively ending the company’s pilot program after just one week.
The moves comes after a week of talks between the state regulators and Uber. DMW started threatening legal action just hours after Uber launched the service in California claiming that the company needed the special permit as the 20 other companies testing self-driving technology in California.
Replying to the claim Uber argued that permission is required if there is any complexity in driving the car themselves and our cars are not sophisticated enough to continuously drive themselves, although the company promotes them as Self-driving.
Moreover DMV officials and the state attorney attorney general, Kamala Harris, have noted that Uber must get a testing permit for its Volvo XC90s, which are navigated by a computer system but have a driver in the front seat who can intervene when needed.
